Roman (mid-2nd century AD)
Gerasa - Jerash
Actors of comedy and tragecy usually wore theatre masks made of linen, leather, wood or pottery, with attached hair. Terracotta masks were typically made in moulds and finished by hand. Theatre masks enabled a small number of actors to play several roles and enhanced their visibility, as masks were expressive and brightly painted.
