World Heritage Sites

Petra

The ancient capital of the Nabataeans is one of the largest and most fascinating archaeological sites in the world, located in a breathtaking landscape.

Wadi Rum

Desert ecosystem of outstanding beauty, with magnificent landforms and archaeological remains, incl. Nabataean ruins and thousands of petroglyphs.

Qusayr Amra

Desert castle of the Umayyads with frescoes depicting bathers, hunting scenes, rulers, musicians, dancers, craftsmen, animals, among others.

Umm er-Rasas

Roman fort which grew into a splendid town in Byzantine times. Large site with excellent mosaic floors. Nearby is the last remaining 14 m high Stylite tower.

As-Salt

Historic center of the city on three closely-spaced hills, with fine Ottoman architecture of yellow sandstone, narrow alleys and stepped passages.

Baptism Site

"Bethany Beyond the Jordan" (Al-Maghtas) is considered the place where Jesus from Nazareth was baptized by John the Baptist.

World Heritage Site is a designation given to monuments, ensembles or places, as well as natural areas of outstanding universal value. They are identified as invaluable and irreplaceable not only for the people of the country where they are located, but for the whole humanity.

The World Heritage Committee decides every year which natural or cultural sites are added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, from those proposals nominated by the respective countries.
