"Gral. Martin Miguel de Güemes" by Eduardo Schiaffino. Graphite on paper, 1902, 95 x 48 cm
Eduardo Schiaffino (1858-1935) was a prominent Argentine painter, critic and historian, founder of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Argentina.
Schiaffino depicts General Güemes with a beard, medium height, wavy hair, dressed in a white army suit with crossed arms and a saber on his left side. The face made by Schiaffino was achieved thanks to the work he recovered from descriptions and likenesses, according to the testimony of Güemes' descendants. This work was made 82 years after Güemes' death. This image is the first one qualified as an authentic portrait of the General by the Instituto Güemesiano and from this one others were made.
