documenta 13, 2012 - Karlsaue park
For documenta 9, in 1992, Jimmie Durham placed two pieces of sandstone (two halves of one block) on the steps of Kassel's Gustav-Mahler-Treppe along with two plaques. One reads "This is a stone from the Red Palace'; the other, "This is a stone from the mountain." Which Red Palace and which mountain?, one might ask. But perhaps it doesn't matter—the twin stones embody a simple paradox: the separation of nature and culture.
