Site-specific intervention
Sennin-iwa, a gigantic rock of twenty-two meters in length and nine meters in height, is thought to have been washed down from the upper reaches of the Takasegawa river. The rock which seems to be leaning forms a cave. A legend tells that an immortal sennin (hermit) lives in the cave who protects local people from demons. The cave is said to have been formed by the river carving the rock over a long period of time. In order to represent the interrelation between the river and the rock, the artist made an artificial waterfall which pumps water from the river and releases water from the top of the rock. A fog generator produces steam from the bottom of the rock, evoking the spirit of the Sennin-iwa. Visitors can see this sight a few times a day.
