Gegen-Expeditionen. Jenseits der Karten

Jenseits der Karten. 8. April - 30. Juni 2014, Museo de Antioquia, Medellín, Kolumbien. Über Umwelt, Wissen der Vorfahren, urbane Entwicklung, indigene und ländliche Bevölkerung.
Apr 2014

Contraexpediciones. Más allá de los mapas is a long term project of the Museum of Antioquia, Medellín, to reflect on the way in which the Antioquian communities live their territories. Through the lense of diverse art practices, topics such as the environment, biodiversity, ancestral knowledge, agriculture, community memory, urban development, indigenous and rural population are addressed and analized.

The title of the show is a response to the colonizing, imperialistic, eurocentric imaginary implicit in the term Expeditions, like those that took place in Colombia in the 19th century. With these Counterexpeditions the Museum of Antioquia proposes a format and strategy to visualize and understand a multiplicity of perspectives on the territories and the colaborative construction of knowledge about them.

Among others topics, the exhibition revises the concept of landscape, not only as an artistic genre, but also as a representation that evidences the way in which human groups relate to the land based on their cultural context and social concerns.

This project concludes the Platform Antioquias, realized since 2013 on the occasion of the Bicentennial of the Antioquia Department's Independence, following the exhibitions Antioquias, diversity and imaginaries of identity and <emphasize>¡Mandinga sea! África in Antioquia.</emphasize>

Contraexpediciones. Más allá de los mapas is layed out along three axes, bringing together paintings, videos, video projections, photography and installations of artists belonging to the art history of Antioquia, such as Francisco Antonio Cano, Eladio Vélez, Rafael Sáenz and Pedro Nel Gómez; artists with production starting during the second half of the 20th century, such as Bernardo Salcedo, Alicia Barney, Rodrigo Callejas, Gloria Posada, Hugo Zapata and Álvaro Barrios; young creators like Mauricio Carmona, Julián Urrego, Edwin Monsalve, the Colectivo Gráfico La Colmena, Eulalia de Valdenebro, Antena Mutante; and international names such as Rodrigo Braga, from Brasil, with his work that was displayed at the São Paulo Biennial, and Esteban Álvarez, from Argentina.

The exhibition takes a tour through mainly Antioquean art from the end of the 19th century, where a colonial and Eurocentric view that idealizes and makes the landscape exotic is evident, right up to our times, when proposals questioning those traditional forms of representation arise.

The second part of Contraexpediciones
shows, through art, the marks left on the land and its people by different cultural, economic and political practices, such us territorial disputes and armed conflict; extractive practices, agri-business and illicit crop cultivation; rural and intra-urban displacements; and urban development.
The exhibition was nurtured by a series of experiences and working residencies, in which the invited artists and collectives, together with members of the local communities, examined the region’s characteristics and issues. The residencies took place in the municipalities of Apartadó, Bello, Belmira, Caucasia, Puerto Berrío, Santa Fe de Antioquia, San Vicente, Yolombó, the Rio Claro Reserve, and the cities Ciudad Bolívar and Medellin, both in the river and downtown areas. Furthermore, other museum-related activities which aim to gather knowledge about a specific area through collection and documentation were also included, such as the El Peñol Historical Museum and the La Salle Natural Science Museum, of the Metropolitan Institute of Technology of Medellin.
