In six chapters, Christoph Schäfer narrates a rhizomatic history of the urban: from the primeval ooze to the "Right to the City" movement in Hamburg in 2009. With watercolor pencils, he traces Henri Lefebvre’s conceptual landscapes, the "revolution of the cities" that the French philosopher already saw coming in the 1970s. In the postindustrial age – so the thesis – the city itself is the central locus of production. Subcultures, artists and designers today play a significant role in the urban fabric: as makers of collective spaces, as originators of sites of desire.
