Through the Eyes of Sophie Halaby
Selected Works from the Collection of George Al’ Ama
The people of Jerusalem tend to regard their city in a unique way, and with more sensitivity, than others do. This is apparent especially in the works of Jerusalem artists. Pioneer artist Sophie Halaby, born and raised in the Holy City, typically focused on Jerusalem in her artwork. In this part of the exhibition, A. M. Qattan Foundation highlights the relationship and perspective of this talented artist with her city through her paintings. The various symbols and expressions of the city based on Sophie’s Jerusalemite experience are in sharp contrast to the Orientalist depiction of the city.
