Little known outside of Colombia, the fraud of the Alzate Ceramics is a fascinating story of forgery, exoticism and museology. Responding to the increasing local and international interest for Precolombian artefacts during the 2nd half of the 19th century, a family of Antioquian artisans created an enormous ensemble of indigenous ceramics, that was mainly collected by Leocadio María Arango. This group was selected based on a catalogue published by Arango in 1905.
