Are You Awake. 2013
Audio recording, transcripts, double bed with linen, wall text
On October 5th, 2013, a group of over one hundred selected citizens took part in relaying telephonic conversations along a specific route in Bombay, in response to one of three words: sleep, sleeplessness and waking. The telephonic system, which connected one participant to another from the southern to the northern end of the city, passed through a wide range of societal nodes including residences, offices, hotels, restaurants, shops, security personnel and domestic workers. Interpreting the three words as either a physical condition or a mental attitude, some citizens spoke of personal issues with regards to sleep or sleeplessness, while others conversed on the need for political awakening and civic agency within the struggle for democracy.
