The Strength of Sleep - The Cohabitations of All the Living

As the must-see art event of the northern winter, the eleventh edition of the Quebec City Biennial takes place from 23 February to 28 April, 2024 under the theme The Strength of Sleep – Cohabitations of the Living. Manif d’art 11 – the Quebec City Biennial draws its inspiration from Canadian winters and the dormant earth to delve into the multiple nuances of human sleep and awakening.

Manif d’art 11 is led by visionary curator Marie Muracciole, and offers a unique perspective fuelled by her vast experience. As she underlines in her curatorial text: "By liberating inner, uncontrolled, and sometimes crucial strengths, and by altering our reflexes and shifting our perceptions, sleep can change how we perceive the world." And further: "Vigils, meditations, daydreams —these are forms of half-slumber that nourish our days and give us time to experience out-of-sync perceptions, discordant thoughts, and suspended judgments. The artists remind us that these moments are made of forces that allow us to grow into our ways of living and cohabiting on a planet of which we are not the owners and where we are not the only subjects."

This edition is an artistic journey that will cross geographic borders and explore the interconnections between cultures, while celebrating the richness of Quebec and Canada’s art scene and traditional hospitality. From internationally renowned artists to emerging talents, this biennial highlights the diversity and vitality of artistic creation, and creates a stimulating dialogue between local, European, and global influences. Over the event’s nine weeks, artists present their work in 40 locations across the Capitale-Nationale region (the administrative area around the provincial capital), including 14 galleries, 2 main exhibition venues, and 13 public art sites. The program also includes projects by 4 emerging curators, nearly thirty creative family workshops, film screenings, and eight creative residencies.

As The Strength of Sleep speaks of regeneration, the organizers are pleased to introduce new changes that enhance the event. Espace Quatre Cents, the modern multifunctional venue located in the Old Port, originally built for Quebec City's 400th anniversary celebrations, hosts the main exhibition, with a new pavilion inaugurated at Exmuro, in the heart of Quebec City’s famous tourist district. This Manif also extends its programming beyond the Capitale-Nationale region to include the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul and the Musée d’art de Joliette.

Along with new prestigious collaborations with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Andy Warhol Museum, and the Félix González-Torres Foundation, Manif d’art 11 launches a new film program and many cultural mediation activities. The Quebec City Biennial celebrates innovation and creativity with a program comprised almost entirely of never-before-seen works by 60 artists at 40 venues.

Entrance to each of the Biennial’s sites is free, with the exception of the main exhibition. A broad program of events, destined for a wide range of audiences, offer diverse perspectives through art activities, conferences, and discussions. Programs for families and schools are also available, in keeping with the Biennial’s commitment to making art accessible to all.
