The Doge’s Palace was the residence of the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice. A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, it was transformed into a museum in 1923.

Used for formal entrances, the Giants’ Staircase (right) is guarded by Sansovino’s two colossal statues of Mars and Neptune, which represents Venice’s power by land and by sea.
