Carpet. 2020
Cow hide, 200 x 200 cm
Carpet continues Sinnokrot’s exploration of mapping and ecology though the mirrored form of the Occupied Palestinian Territories. In his West Bank Butterfly (2006), series Sinnokrot work drew connections between the mottled wings of the local, endangered Apharitis Cilissa butterfly and the West Bank’s patchwork of discontinuous Palestinian enclaves. His West Bank Butterfly Kite Project (2009) similarly referenced the ancient history of aerial warfare and surveillance. In Carpet (جلد), however, Sinnokrot’s gestalt is presented for the first time on the floor. Cut by Sinnokrot and a butcher in Hebron, Carpet (جلد) is an embodiment of those trans-corporeal connections between skin, domestication, and normalized violence that lay, quite literally, underfoot.
