View of the exhibition

Carlos Basualdo, one of the curators of documenta 11 (2002) and himself of Argentinian origin, means the exhibition title “The Structure of Survival” quite literally. He wants to bring together works that deal with the effects of the political, economic and social crisis in the so-called developing countries. The exhibition aims to show how artists and architects react to these conditions and what aesthetic forms of survival and resistance they develop.

The aim is to question what constitutes a “crisis” and how it manifests itself in art and society. Basualdo assumes that art, as a form of knowledge production, contributes to recognizing such circumstances and dealing with them.
