Marcus Garvey (1887-1940), born in Jamaica but active in the United States, became one of the advocates of pan-Africanism. The Black Star Steamship Line (1919-1922) was an enterprise intended to provide a means for African Americans to return to Africa while also enabling black people around the Atlantic to exchange goods and services.
