Khorfakkan Art Centre

For this edition of the Biennial, the old courthouse, now the Khorfakkan Art Centre, hosts a suite of artworks and projects in spaces that have not previously been accessible to the public. The Art Centre—a section of which operates as one of six Foundation facilities across the emirate—is also the site of specially designed Learning Rooms for Biennial visitors.

About Khorfakkan

Khorfakkan lies along the Gulf of Oman between Kalba and Dibba Al Hisn. The town is Sharjah’s largest exclave and one of the UAE’s natural harbours. Khorfakkan has a rich, multilayered history as a node of maritime and military significance. Before it was incorporated into Al Qasimi territory in the 1850s, Portuguese, Persian and Omani colonial regimes vied for control of this strategic port town. By the late 1970s, many of the traditional homes at its historical centre had fallen derelict as the town developed into a container port. The beautiful coastal scenery has never stopped attracting visitors, however, and in recent years, Sharjah has undertaken several large-scale hospitality projects to develop tourism in the area.
