Wafaa Bilal's sculpture is designed to re-create the camera obscura effect, offering visitors a very unique perspective and experience. The work is part of the Maraya Art Park at Al Majaaz waterfront.
Inside the sculpture there are 15 windows, each of which works using unique motorised irises, programmed to operate by opening for 10 minutes then shutting for 15 minutes to allow the eyes to adjust to the darkness, after which images will be projected from Al Majaz Waterfront inside the space. These images are upside down, because of the pinhole features within the sculpture. The inspiration behind the sculpture is based on Ibn Haytham's discovery of the first pinhole camera and Al Jazari's engineering practices for mechanical motion.
