The Sama'a was one of the most common types of pearling boats used in the northern Gulf. The Sama'a could have a crew of 50-60 or more. The oars would have been used to row the boat away from shore where the sail would then be put up. The small baskets were used by divers to collect pearl-bearing oysters once the boat reached the pearling banks.
