“In the Heart of Another Country” explores the concept of home—of longing and belonging—through almost 150 works from 61 artists. The landmark memoir by the late artist and writer Etel Adnan “In the Heart of the Heart of Another Country” (2004) served as a source of inspiration. The exhibition and this publication take us on a journey through time from 1935 to the present, drawing on the collections of the Sharjah Art Foundation. Tracing the migration of artistic forms from the Emirate of Sharjah’s heritage areas to Zanzibar and Cairo, this travelogue extends to the suburbs of Paris, the streets of Harlem, New York, and back again.

Curated and edited by Omar Kholeif.
