Tokamachi | Kawanishi | Matsudai | Matsunoyama | Tsunan | Nakasato

Located on the east side of the Shinano river, Tokamachi has been developed through textile industry and agriculture. In addition to rice production on the fields of the river terrace, there is a diverse agricultural activity including horticulture and mushroom growing. Traces of the culture of textile industry can be observed across the city.

Kaen-gata earthenware vessels (produced in the Jomon era about 4,500 years ago) were excavated from Sasayama Remains in the Nakajyo Area of Tokamachi during archeological surveys in the 1970s. They have handles that look like flames and their shape and patterns are artistically highly regarded. Samples of these vessels can be seen at the Tokamachi-city Museum.

Since the first edition in the year 2000, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale has produced more than 380 artworks, 105 of them in Tokamachi.
