Gaganendranath Tagore was a prolific visual artist and cartoonist who was also involved in theater, literature, educational reforms, and the development of rural handicrafts in Colonial India. He was the nephew of renowned poet-philosopher Rabindranath Tagore and the brother of Abanindranath Tagore, a pioneer of the Bengal School of Art.
Following the Partition of Bengal in 1905 and the rising fervor of the freedom movement that began to politicize the intellectual elite, Tagore’s cartoons and illustrations found their way into newspapers, magazines, and books between 1916 and 1930.
