This section of the exhibition features a number of abstract and semi-abstract works. The only sculpture in this space is by Iraqi artist Ismail Fattah, executed in 1965. Often blurring the lines between abstraction and representation, Fattah’s artwork presents a dilemma between figuration and its negation. In his untitled 1965 sculpture, Fattah depicts limb-like supports for a rectangular core, obscuring any decisive representation. Rendering the inexpressible qualities of human consciousness through sculpture and paint, Ismail Fattah blends form with intangible ideas of human consciousness.
