The artists and intellectuals of this exhibition have ranged across South America in all directions. They have visited tranquil small towns in the hinterland and burgeoning mega-cities bursting at the seams. Places that cling to the past and modern metropolises that have eliminated the last remnants of history. They have used contemporary means to investigate Latin America’s 200 years of independence.

Some sites last only a moment – those rare moments that only art can grasp – and, as Mario Benedetti says, some times have no sites. This paradox may apply to the present, which greatly condenses time but offers it no ideal home anywhere. Once again, it is art alone that can give the present time a site and shelter.

"Less Time Than Space" denotes that we free ourselves from the tradition that prefers the celebration of anniversaries of historic or notable events, and rather approach - with today's perspective - the places where these events have taken place, and where their pulse can still be heard. In this way, we recover the meaning of Independence, articulating its local echo through art and contemporary ideas. The artworks in the exhibition shed light on many of the decisive political, social and cultural transformations that Latin American countries are subjected to at present.

"Less Time Than Space", presented in a first version at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Quito at the end of 2009, brings together artists from Latin America and Germany. During 2010 and 2011, the exhibition will travel to several cities in Latin America, including new artists, and culminating its tour in Europe. To accompany the project, a 300-page book is published with a curatorial text by Alfons Hug, pictures of the exhibited works, and essays by Raúl Zibechi, Alonso Cueto, Timo Berger, Frank Semper, and Alexander García Düttmann. All the texts appear in Spanish and German.

The exhibition and publication "Menos Tiempo que Lugar / Less Time Than Space" is a project realized in the context of the Bicentennial of Independence of Latin America, conceived by the Goethe-Institut, with the support of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
