Venue: Bait Khaled Bin Ibrahim Al Yousif
Taste of a Stone: Itiat Esa Ufok. 2013
Installation and performance with gravel, rocks, epiphytes, inkjet prints on limestone.
Combining site-specific installation, photography and performance, Taste of a Stone: Itiat Esa Ufok is situated in the courtyard and two rooms of Bait Khaled Ibrahim, a historical site in Sharjah’s Heritage Area. All of the elements in the courtyard are components for a performance: an encounter with an image, plant or stone becomes the beginning of a story about personal experience, contemplation, exchange and meditation. Eight photographic images, printed on Galala limestone, are placed in eight alcoves inside the house, along with a woven textile piece titled Kolanut Tales, 2012. The photographs are fragmented memories of spaces encountered during Nkanga’s childhood in Nigeria and other places in the world that, although geographically distant, display similar architectural outlines.
