The Moroccan-born art historian will be in charge of the gallery of the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa) in Berlin as of 1 April 2016.
Mar 2016On the 1st April 2016, Alya Sebti starts her new position as Director of the ifa Gallery Berlin. The Moroccan-born art historian (1983) works internationally as independent curator and author since 2010. She was Artistic Director of the 5th Marrakech Biennale (2011-14), and curator, among others, of the exhibitions "Carrefour/Treffpunkt" at the ifa Galleries, "Casablanca, energie noire" part of Mons 2015 - European Capital of Culture, "Now Eat My Script" at KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin (2014), and the residency program of Villa Romana in Florence.
"ifa has always connected cultures and stimulated exchanges," comments Alya Sebti on her appointment. "My task lies in a continuation and extension of these traditions. I will deepen and enhance them by encouraging meaningful cross-disciplinary dialogue and by firmly establishing the ifa Gallery Berlin as a dynamic discursive platform between global cultural actors, the intergenerational Berlin art scene and its audience."
For the ifa Galleries Berlin and Stuttgart Alya Sebti currently curates the exhibition "In the Carpet" (working title) together with Salma Lahlou and Mouna Mekouar, in cooperation with Akademie Schloss Solitude, that will be on view as of October 2016 in Stuttgart and January 2017 in Berlin.
