In the late 19th and early 20th century, many European colonial powers integrated soldiers from their colonies into their own armies. While Germany left most of these soldiers on African soil, the French, British and Belgian armies had them fighting in Europe itself. The results of this history have continued to affect each respective state until the current day: immigrants from former colonies often find themselves bereft of any basic right in the former colonizing state. In France, so-called "sans-papiers" (literally: without papers) organize themselves politically, demanding official recognition of Europe’s debt towards Africa. Through the combinations in this installation, Attia suggests that this debt is not simply a moral one, but a real one that requires adequate compensation for the services already provided.
