The video Mirage and the accompanying photos are enigmatic, poetic sequences:
On parched farmland, an excavating machine wanders randomly, farm workers praying in its uplifted shovels. Then one sees the pleated skirt and elegant pumps of an "urban" woman, and a man buries his head in the ground. Alongside an unmoved local resident with a kaffiyeh scarf, a bald man flexes his muscles. Then the farm workers appear again, this time praying on the dry earth; somebody pours water from a plastic bottle over the head of one of them.
The final scene provides the key to understanding: on the shore of a river, a man kisses or reanimates a pregnant woman. The landscape shows that this is the Tigris at the border between Syria and Iraq, where the controversial Ilisu Dam is to dam the river, robbing tens of thousands of people (mostly Kurds) of their livelihood and flooding the ancient city Hasankeyf.
