Kepada Yang Mulia (To His Majesty)
Installation and performance
14 Dec. 2009, 15:30 pm, from Fort Vredeburg to Alun-Alun square, Yogyakarta.
The performance was inspired by the "Gunungan" processions, a Javanese ritual performed by the Kraton (Sultan Palace) in Yogyakarta on festive holidays, where palace attendants carry a huge rice cone decorated with vegetables and fruits along with baskets full of food, which is finally donated to the people.
In this case, the cone of the Gunungan (Tree of Life) was made out of ashes and waste from a sugar factory owned by the Sultanate of Yogyakarta which heavily pollutes the environment. The performers carried baskets full of ashes, sugar, earth and sugarcane plants. The procession was escorted by musicians with traditional percussion instruments and accompanied by environmental poetry performances.
