In one issue each year, Parachute, the Canadian magazine for contemporary art and culture that has existed since 1975, features a city in which the "convergence of intellectual and artistic activities are fostering new developments in artistic practices". The series began in 2001 with Mexico City.
At the end of 2002, there was an issue on Beirut. Chantal Pontbriand, founder and editor in chief of the magazine explains the choice of Beirut, amongst other things, due to it being a pivotal and emblematic city: multicultural and multi-religious, between war and peace, and of a multiple identity. In Beirut, it is possible to articulate a critical and artistically productive opinion of the modernist vision of history and of the clefts between past and present, history and the future, and local versus the global.
Such critical discourse appears in Parachute in both comprehensive essays as well as in monographic articles and diverse texts and pictures authored by artists themselves. Amongst the protagonists of the art scene from the Beirut and Lebanese Diaspora represented, are Walid Sadek, Akram Zaatari, Mohamad Soueid, Mahmoud Hojeij, Michel Lasserre, Paola Yacoub, Walid Raad, Bilal Khbeiz, Rabih Mroué, Tony Chakar, Jayce Salloum, and Mona Hatoum. Along with the visual arts, aspects of architecture, urbanism, and socio-cultural life are also dealt with.
