Büyükada ("Big Island" in Turkish) is the largest of the nine so-called Princes' Islands (in Turkish just Adelar = Islands) in the Sea of Marmara.

Under Byzantine Emperor Justin II (ruled 565 – 574), a palace and monastery was built on the island which became a place of exile for banished empresses, princes and others (therefore the popular name).

The important Turkish artist Princess Fahrelnissa Zeid (1901 - 1991) was born on Büyükada. Leon Trotsky stayed for four years (1929-1933) on the island, his first residing place in exile after his deportation from the Soviet Union in February 1929.

For the first half of the 20th century, Büyükada was very popular among prosperous Turks, Greeks, Jews and Armenians. The island has many historical buildings, and remains a well-liked excursion and leasure place for Istanbul residents.
