Plant-based gelatine, flour, corn syrup, and Carthamus Tenius seeds
In the larger power struggle, nature is the ultimate force. It resists, and reforms, and rebirths itself in spite of the power structures developed by humankind. The artist re-envisions the column, a symbol of power found at the entrance of classical buildings that hosted authorities throughout history: courts, banks and governments, among others. This classic symbol has not wavered in the progression of history as it holds onto its power except in natural decay.
The Carthamus tenuis seed is a survivor of an attempted genocide by British occupying forces. It remains proudly within its ecosystem, resisting attempts at eradication, continually rebirthing itself. It is the original inhabitant.
The installation is placed in a natural environment and becomes a source of nourishment to birds; to create a surrealist scene where nature conquers authority in gradual decay.
