“It was during these thoughts that the idea occurred to me . . . how charming it would be if it were possible to cause these natural images to imprint themselves durably and remain fixed upon the paper! And why should it not be possible? I asked myself.”
The Pencil of Nature, Henry Fox Talbot (1844)
Plants had a significant presence in early photography during the Victorian era. British inventors and pioneering photographers either kept gardens or studied botany; therefore, some of the first photographs taken were of plants.
This project explores the history of photography and experiments with light and chemicals in the process of image fixation, creating pictures and ways of representation.
The seeds of Phalaris Paradoxa were infused with water and sealed into customised slides, thus serving as living ecosystems. The seeds either stick to or float inside the slides, surrounded by water and oxygen, occasionally exposed to the light emitting from the projector. They will either continue their lifecycle or decompose during this exhibition, allowing us to witness the paradox between life and death, preservation and decay.
