Salvage
Installation
While living in the Gaza Strip, I survived four wars, the last in 2021. Following every destruction, colours and spaces lose their privacy and warmth and turn into grey public space. The scenes in Gaza are similar to those in Jerusalem, the Naqab, Hebron, and the Jordan Valley, where attempts to suppress, demolish, and confiscate our existence, memories, and future, persist.
Our memories are haunted by obsession with the lost space, since the space of the salon, which should suggest intimacy, communication, and togetherness, has been transformed into a grey, aggressive, alienating space, filled with tension and abandoned belongings. We are constantly looking for what we can salvage from the rubble after every destruction, to continue living and restore a sense of safety and reassurance. To deconstruct the concept of the Palestinian salon, through my work I collected some of the ruins from houses, buildings, and furniture, and I re-destroyed them with an experiment that resembles the actual shape of what I see around me and what everyone who visits Gaza sees after every destruction.
Rana Kamal Batrawi lives in Gaza. She gained her BA degree in art education from Al-Aqsa University. Batrawi is particularly interested in sculptures. She exhibited her works in three different exhibitions and facilitated sculpture workshops for children at the A.M. Qattan Foundation centre for children in Gaza.
Batrawi received 60 hours of training with the Palestinian community assistance program creative team in May 2012. She participated in a training course on doll making and children’s drawing analysis, and joined the Artists Club Auction in Jerusalem, Qalandiya and Gaza in 2018. She also participated in various exhibitions and workshops from 2004 to 2022 in both Palestinian and international cities.
