Eulalia Valldosera

Eulalia Valldosera (Vilafranca del Penedés, Barcelona, 1963) is a leading Spanish artist based in Barcelona. Much before being recognized in her native country, she participated in numerous Biennales around the globe that took place during the mid and late 90s and later on. Through a dynamic practice that interweaves photography, performance, installation and video, Valldosera creates her unique language by means of projected light on everyday objects, thus recreating the inner collective scenarios of our psyche in an elusive theatrical portrayal of female identity, placing her body as a measure and reference of all experience. By openly showing the mechanisms of production, the 'trick' is uncovered and the power figure of the artist becomes relative, blurring the boundaries between public and private space, and physical and mental bodies. As light plays with shadow, and the objects arrange and re-arrange within the space, the spectator becomes a participant immersed in a psychological space. That's why she conceives herself, in her own words, “as a producer of meanings, rather than as a producer of works.”

Valldosera has had significant retrospective shows at Witte de With, Rotterdam and Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid; Kunsthalle Lophem, Brugge, Museé d’Art Contemporain de Montréal and Fundacio Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona. She has participated in many international Biennales such as Lyon, Venice, Istanbul, Gwangju in South Korea, Site Santa Fe, Johannesburg, Sydney, Yokohama, and São Paulo, the Manifesta I in Rotterdam and Skulptur Projekte Münster in 1997. Her work is in private and public collections including MACBA, Museo Reina Sofía, Deutsche Bank, La Caixa, Centre d’Art Santa Mònica, MUSAC, FRAC PACA, Maison Européenne de la Photographie and Grand-Hornu, Belgium.
