Illuminate Me
Site-specific installation
This is an installation being presented on a stage of Sunuma Shinmeisha, where Amaterasu, the goddess of light is enshrined. In Arabic culture, light means knowledge, purity and truth. The straw rope (shimenawa) used in the myth of Amaterasu Oomikami reappears on the stage as trees surrounding the shrine which expresses the passage of light walked on by the god. In the myth, the darkness fell when Amaterasu closed herself in the Amano-Iwato (cave). After she was brought back to the world, a boundary was drawn by the straw rope at the entrance to the cave so that the goddess of light (Amaterasu) would never return to the cave. The artist hopes that viewers would feel from the work the human resistance and their fight against the darkness throughout their lives.
