For many years, Lara Favaretto has been collecting images from a wide array of sources as she researches new projects, compiling a private archive of pictures that she turns to for inspiration. In many cases, Favaretto has found the images online, but she also scans them from contemporary and historical books, newspapers, and magazines, and sometimes incorporates photographs she has taken herself.
This archive was made publicly available for the first time at MoMA PS1 and it is now being presented in Sharjah. The artist presents it in a disembodied, unsearchable form, dispersing the printed images inside thousands of discarded books that she has recovered and arranged randomly. Assembled without any identifying information, the archive functions like a visual blog, albeit anachronistically housed within a library of casualties from our age of digital publishing and archival technology.
Viewed comprehensively, Favaretto’s archive registers the associative procedure through which she links together disparate subjects, and offers insight into her working process. Yet the artist breaks up her archive and conceals it, frustrating such direct correlations. At the conclusion of the exhibition, a book will be published to memorialise the archive and index this cast-off library within which it temporarily resided. Visitors are welcome to thumb through the books in search of Favaretto’s pictures and to take a book with them.
