Pavilion of Turkey: Lapses

Press Release #1, April 2009

Turkey in the 53rd International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennial

The project called "Lapses" will be representing Turkey in the 53rd International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennial that takes place between 7 June - 22 November 2009. Sponsored by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and coordinated by Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, and the curator of the exhibition is Basak Senova.

In September 2008, the advisory board for the Pavilion of Turkey, organized by Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, which consists of Çelenk Bafra, Melih Fereli, Vasif Kortun and Beral Madra selected Basak Senova's project proposal "Lapses" after the careful evaluation of all project applications. The board appointed Senova as the curator of the 53rd International Art Exhibition Venice Biennial Pavilion of Turkey.

"Lapses" has been shaped by the projects that demonstrate how the perception of "occuring events" can vary and lead to the differing narrations of history because of 'lapses' in collective memory - which is composed both by the media and by other surrounding environmental data. "Lapses" consists of two art projects: "Exploded City" by Ahmet Ögüt, and "CATALOG 2009" by Banu Cennetoglu, both reveal the possibility for diverse memory formations - or diverse narratives - conceivable through lapses.

The project is accompanied by a three volume book series. The first and third volumes are edited by Basak Senova, while the second volume is edited by Jalal Toufic.

Senova has assigned Nazli Gürlek as the assistant curator of the project.

Basak Senova is one of the founding members of NOMAD and an Assist. Prof. Dr. at Kadir Has University, Faculty of Communication, Department of Communication Design. Previous projects that she has curated include "Conscious in Coma", "ctrl_alt_del", "under.ctrl", and the exhibitions "Rejection Episodes" and "Unrecorded."
