The process of writing Chinese ideograms, which originated over two thousand years ago, is governed by strict rules. Rather than follow these standardised patterns, however, Yuichi Inoue sought to express each character’s primitive meaning, turning it into a work of art with the expressive energy of his brush. Yet while they depart from convention, his works are imbued with the spirit of the ancient ideograms, which were based on forms in the natural world.
