Tobi Maier

Tobi Maier is a critic and curator based in New York. While living in London he founded the curatorial collective dosensos (with Anna Colin, 2002-2005) and organized several exhibitions such as Six Sites for Sound at MOT, Alma Enterprises and Fortescue Avenue galleries, and events at Tate Britain, Resonance 104.4 FM. Between 2002 and 2005 he organized approximately 100 radio programs on London's art radio station Resonance 104.4FM. In 2004 he co-founded the art space HTTP in London where he curated exhibitions by Erkki Kurenniemi and Mika Taanila, Lucas Bambozzi and Elisabeth Penker. After graduating with an MA in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art in London in 2006, Tobi Maier moved to work as a curatorial intern with Lisette Lagnado at the 27th Bienal de São Paulo. Between 2006 and 2008 he served as curator at the Frankfurter Kunstverein under director Chus Martinez, where, among many other projects, he worked on exhibitions with Hugo Canoilas, H.arta and the group exhibition Experimenta Folklore. He also collaborated on Manifesta 7 (2008) as curatorial adviser to Adam Budak, where he organized the chapter auditory epode, including a futurist sound archive in a work by The nextENTERprise, as well as installations by Anna Ostoya and Florian Hecker and new comissions from Chris Watson and Zafos Xagoraris and collaborations with RAI and Radio Papesse radio stations.

Since 2008 he is the curator/director at Ludlow 38, the downtown satellite space for contemporary art of Goethe-Institut on New York's Lower East Side. Recent exhibitions he curated are Julius Koller & Jiri Kovanda, the group exhibition Chance Encounters (feat. Karin Schneider, Manon de Boer, Pablo Pijnappel and Tim Braden) as well as Lara Almarcegui: Guide to Wastelands of the Flushing River (curated with European Kunsthalle Cologne), Tobias Putrih: After Frei Otto, Natascha Sadr Haghighian: Fruits of One’s Labor and Maryanne Amacher: City Links and Abstract derive (group show), curated with Axel Wieder. Accompanying many of the exhibitions at Ludlow 38, Tobi Maier organizes talks and lectures or initiates collaborations with other museums and cultural institutions in the city.

After commissioning Martin Beck for an architectural relaunch of Ludlow 38 and Berlin based designers H I T for a new graphic identity of the space during winter 2010/2011, this spring brings exhibition and publication projects by Franz Mon & Waldemar Cordeiro as well as Jozef Robakowski to Ludlow 38.

Tobi Maier contributes to a variety of journals and publications such as Idea, MAP and EXIT, recently with texts on Ferdinand Kriwet, Arto Lindsay, Gustav Metzger, interviews with Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Marina Abramovic, Artur Zmijewski, Jarbas Lopes and f.marquespenteado. Tobi Maier lectures frequently and recent talks include: Escola MauMaus (Lisboa), Dia: Beacon (on Imi Knoebel's Raum 19) as well as Art on Parade: Between Procession and Demonstration, Carnival and Spectacle (with Marlon Griffith, Arto Lindsay, Jennifer Scott, and Claire Tancons at Goethe-Institut New York) and a conversation with Franz Erhard Walther (with Yasmil Raymond at Goethe-Institut New York).
