The Gothic palace of the noble family of the Michiel received the specification “del Brusà” after a fire that destroyed it almost completely in 1774 (bruciare in Italian = to burn down), It was reconstructed three years later thanks to the funds of the Venetian Signoria. It was possible to reuse just some part of the original building, for example the beautiful Gothic windows of the XV century. There are two noble floors and each of them has a luxurious balcony.
The interiors still keep rich decorations in stucco and fresco, realized in major part by Jacopo Guarana. For example, on the ceiling of the second floor, there is a famous fresco made by Guarana which represents the mythological group of Zefiro and Flora. Probably it is connected with an happy event of the story of Michiel family. The old and noble Michiel family provided three dogi to the Venice Republic.
All events and exhibitions at Palazzo Michiel are handeld by the GlobalArtAffairs Foundation, a Dutch non-profit organization that aims to heighten the awareness about the more philosophical themes in contemporary art, and make these subjects more accessible to a wider international audience.
Palazzo Michiel is regularly used as venue for exhibitions in the context of the International Art Exhibition, and Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.
