Aphrodite, seated next to Adonis, threatens with her sandal a winged Cupid or Eros, who is being presented to her by one of the three Graces. A rose in the left hand of the goddess refers to the Rose Festival in Gaza. The mosaizist probably knew Procopius of Gaza's descriptions (ca. 465 - 529 A.D.) of images on the Hippolytus myth in a Gaza palace.
A second Grace grasps the foot of yet another Cupid who attempts to take refuge among the branches of a tree.
