12th century, Sicily
Ivory, cut, polished, with green, brown, black and gold painting; wood; brass, riveted, gilded
height: 16,5 cm, width: 35,7 cm, depth: 19,8 cm
The box with a desk-shaped lid has a core of wooden panels, which was probably lined with textile. The outer ivory plates are decorated with green, brown and golden, black contoured paintings.
Two medallions filled with tendrils on the front are flanked by birds (including hoopoes and peacocks) and hunting dogs. On the back there are three medallions, the middle medallion with a stylized lion representation and also with birds next to it. The two identical narrow sides show a harp player in a medallion surrounded by birds.
The narrow edge of the lid is decorated at the front with an inscription in Kufi scripture and merges into bird and vegetable motifs. The decoration on the sloping sides of the lid also features medallions depicting tendrils and gazelles, again partly flanked by birds and hunting dogs. The upper side of the lid is decorated with two stylized lions, each in a medallion and surrounded by birds. The brass hinges are lance-shaped and gilded. A gilded handle is attached to the top, while a lock is attached to the front in the middle.
This box belongs to a group of larger and smaller boxes, possibly made in Sicily or southern Italy, although similar boxes are also known from Spain. In church treasures they served as reliquaries and were probably also diplomatic gifts. The clients probably came from the courtly milieu.
