Greeting by HAYASHI Fumiko

Mayor of the City of Yokohama, President of the Organizing Committee

I am delighted to announce that the Yokohama Triennale 2011 will proceed as planned.

The Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11 occurred right before the Tokyo press conference for the Triennale was scheduled to begin. Since then, the situation in Japan has changed dramatically, and many museums and galleries have been forced to postpone or cancel their exhibitions.

As for the Triennale, we too were concerned about whether to go ahead with the loans for the artworks involved and to invite the participating artists to Japan. In contrast to our anxiety, however, responses from the various artists were all extremely encouraging in promising their support and participation. As a result, the Triennale can now go forward as planned thanks to the generous backing of all those involved.

A certain mood of self-restraint, however, continues to spread across the country in the wake of the earthquake. Returning to a semblance of normality and working to revitalize the economy and our social lives will hopefully serve as a source of encouragement to the country as a whole, including those areas most severely affected by the quake, and restore a sense of confidence and energy to Japan.

I hope this exhibition conveys a strong message about the power of art, the courage and support of our friends all over the world, as well as the creativity and diversity that these artists represent. The Triennale reaches out to the hearts and minds of everyone from the quake-stricken areas, as well as all residents of Japan. lt is my firm conviction that the creative energy of art and culture will guide us towards a new source of hope for the future.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all those who have offered their kind advice and assistance in preparation for the Triennale, and look very much forward to their continued support.

I hope all of you will be able to join us in Yokohama later this year.
