Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara have used their Manifesto, issued in June 2017, as a reference point for putting this exhibition together. As the first point they wrote:
FREESPACE describes a generosity of spirit and a sense of humanity at the core of architecture's agenda, focusing on the quality of space itself. Freespace focuses on architecture’s ability to provide free and additional spatial gifts to those who use it and on its ability to address the unspoken wishes of strangers.

FREESPACE includes two Special Sections:

Close Encounter

16 participants with works that originate in a reflection on well-known buildings of the past. With regard to this section the Curators explained they have discovered "invention and creativity at the micro and macro scales historic buildings liberated by the intelligence of the architects; forgotten buildings re-visited and brought to life; transformative typologies of habitation; infrastructural needs translated into public and civic facilities."

The Practice of Teaching

13 participants with projects developed as part of teaching experiences. The Curators wrote about this section: "A key component in attending to the continuity of tradition in architecture is the practice of teaching. Many of the invited practitioners are actively engaged in teaching. The world of making and building merges with the imaginative world that is highlighted within the Exhibition."

Projects

Forte Marghera Special Project
In Mestre, curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara. An installation by architects Sami Rintala and Dagur Eggertsson, also built to host a series of events scheduled in Forte Marghera.

Applied Arts Pavilion
Sale d’Armi in the Arsenale, curated by Christopher Turner and Olivia Horsfall Turner. The project reflects upon the future of social housing by presenting a fragment of the social housing estate, Robin Hood Gardens, which was designed by Alison and Peter Smithson in East London and completed in 1972.
Renewed for the third consecutive year, the collaboration between La Biennale and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London has made possible this exhibition.

Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement: Kenneth Frampton

Kenneth FramptonThe English architect, historian, critic and educator Kenneth Frampton (* 1930 London) is the recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

Trained at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London, Kenneth Frampton has worked as an architect and as an architectural historian and critic, and is now Ware Professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University, New York. He has taught at a number of leading institutions in the field, including the Royal College of Art in London, the ETH in Zurich, the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam, EPFL in Lausanne and the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio.

As architect, writer and critic, as teacher and researcher, he has affected and inspired several generations of students and architects. Modern Architecture: A Critical History is one of his most recognized books. His seminal books include Towards a Critical Regionalism, which was a leader in the influencing of architects to re-value context, place and culture. His Studies on Tectonic Culture was a key work in highlighting the connection between the language of construction and language of architecture. In A Genealogy of Modern Architecture: Comparative Critical Analysis of Built Form, he captures with incisive clarity the inner workings of projects, de-coding them to make them legible for us all.
