El pedimento. 2009-2015
Mixed media site specific installation
These sculptures were made by the female inmates of Casa Reclusione Donne, Giudecca, Venezia.
I proposed to them to mold something out of mud.
They had to picture themselves as old ladies and try to imagine what they would need in their old age.
This necessity is what they had to represent with the mud.
We made this mud using the compost of the jail's vegetable garden, the same compost in which they use to grow their food.
The pieces displayed today are on objects made by the male inmates.
In the beginning about 15 women took part in the project, but as time went by the number decreased.
We met many times per week for several months.
Our intention was to think of ourselves as old women. We imagined what we would need in this time to come.
In this prison there are some older women who are going to be close to the end of their days when they are released. Others, the youngest ones, are not able to visualize their future.
