Shammouti, 2021
Multimedia installation, cylindrical plaster structure with photographs, stereo lenses and speakers, 2 x 3 m
A round space designated to offer the viewer the experience of orange cultivation and trade. The installation includes photos of the production and export of oranges, beginning with the picking of oranges from groves until their shipment. The work presents the process associated with orange cultivation in the vernacular:
ṣāḥeb ālbayّāra (owner of the grove); ālḍّāmen (the agent); tāǧr ālborutqāl (the orange merchant); ālqṣِّyṣ (the harvestor); ālḥmّāl (the porter); ālnqِّyd (evaluates the quality of oranges and decides which ones qualify for exporting); ālʿyِّyd (re-evaluates the quality of oranges after ālnqِّyd ; āllّfّyf (wraps the oranges), al stevedore (packs the oranges in boxes), al ālmʿlّm (closes the boxes and places a paper mentioning the brand, type and number of oranges, and destination).
The images are presented using a stereograph where two images would merge into one giving the illusion of multidimensionality, with reproductions of newspaper advertisements associated with the cultivation and trade of oranges, and some of the challenges faced during the process.
