The fact that I was born in the United States and moved to Palestine at a young age has given me first-hand experience in some of the ways that we divide ourselves as Palestinians. We are constantly being divided and growing more divided as the years pass. Through these divisions that are imposed on us we start to lose touch with our brothers and sisters living within different areas and jurisdictions. The different social classes that make up the Palestinian people each have their own unique problems that keep us focused on ourselves, without the ability or interest to stay in touch with what is happening elsewhere.
Only every now and then, when the situation reaches a critical point, we work on the bigger picture and priorities become clear. Unfortunately, once the situation that brings us together subsides, so does our interest in staying together, at least until next time. Round and round we go.
