Ekkehard and Uta (detail)

Ekkehard II. (approx. 985 - 1046), since 1038 Margrave of Meissen, and his wife Uta von Ballenstedt (* around 1000 - 1046), known worldwide as Uta von Namburg - more about her on the next page.

The statues have remarkable individual facial features. But they are not portraits, since the founders lived 200 years before the figures were sculpted, and there were no representations of them. It is probable that the Naumburg Master used real people from his time as models.
