Smashing. 2004
Digital video, 91:52 min
The work was recorded inside a workshop in Italy and shows the destruction of objects using a stone -a recurring motif in his work-. In this gesture one can see the clash between the raw material and the tool (nature and culture?), once the artist claims the latter status for the stone. The gesture gains even more complex meanings through the repetitive act of protocolizing the objects. Installed as a kind of exhibition opening, Smashing appears here as a powerful portrait of the artist and his scepticism of monumentality and pre-established truths.
