This section of the exhibition focuses on landscape and representations of nature, architecture, and topography. In the centre, is Iraqi artist Abdul Qadir Al-Rassam’s View of the Tigris from 1934. Al-Rassam was a realist painter from among the first generation of Iraqi modern painters, who was dedicated to portraying daily life in Iraq through portraits and landscapes. He received his artistic training in Istanbul in the early 1900s, while studying military science. Upon his return to Iraq, he began sharing his newfound knowledge introducing canvas painting while teaching in Baghdad. View of the Tigris, on display here, is an exemplary painting of his realism, capturing a panoramic view of the historic Tigris river. The river was an essential theme in the artist’s oeuvre and here he depicts the tranquil landscape, using his signature atmospheric perspective.
